Blitter

The Blitter (Block Image Transferer) is a dedicated graphics coprocessor embedded within the Amiga's Agnus custom chip that performs high-speed memory transfers and graphics operations via Direct Memory Access (DMA) without requiring CPU intervention. It accelerates critical graphical functions including rectangular bitmap copying, polygon area filling, and line drawing, enabling sophisticated windowing systems and animation that would otherwise overwhelm the host processor. Operating on bitplane data, the Blitter can execute logical operations (minterms) on up to three source channels simultaneously while writing to a destination, making it a cornerstone of the Amiga's advanced graphical architecture.
